Metal Guide: Choosing Your Jewellery Metals
At Affinity Diamonds, we are committed to ethical craftsmanship. All metals used in our custom jewellery are responsibly sourced from suppliers accredited by the Responsible Jewellery Council, ensuring adherence to human rights, fair labour practices, and environmental standards throughout the supply chain.
We offer a choice of Platinum or Gold for your bespoke engagement ring or fine jewellery piece. Each metal has unique qualities in terms of appearance, durability, and maintenance. Understanding the difference between platinum and gold will help you make the right choice for your lifestyle, style, and long-term wear.

What is the difference between Platinum and Gold?
When choosing the right metal for your engagement ring or custom jewellery, both gold and platinum offer distinct benefits:
- Gold comes in yellow, white, and rose tones. Platinum has a naturally white-silver finish with timeless appeal.
- Platinum is hypoallergenic, ideal for sensitive skin. Gold may contain alloys that can cause irritation for some.
- White gold is harder, while platinum is more durable over time. Platinum scratches more easily but retains its metal.
- Prices vary, but white gold and platinum are currently similar in cost. Platinum may be slightly more expensive due to its weight.
What’s the Difference Between 9K and 18K Gold?
At Affinity Diamonds, we primarily use 18K gold for its superior quality, with 9K gold offered on select pieces. Since gold is a soft metal, it’s blended with alloys for durability.
- 18K gold contains 75% pure gold and is stamped 750, offering greater resistance to tarnish and scratches—ideal for everyday wear.
- 9K gold contains 37% pure gold, stamped 370, and is a more affordable option with slightly less lustre and durability.
Choosing between them depends on your preference for purity, durability, and budget.

Gold Colour Options

White Gold
White Gold is rhodium plated to give a white finish which is similar to platinum whereas platinum naturally has a silvery finish. White Gold will require a yearly rhodium plating, which is complimentary for all Affinity Diamonds pieces.

Yellow Gold
Yellow Gold is an extraordinary and rare precious metal, with an unmatched combination of chemical and physical properties. It is the only yellow metal and the most non-reactive of all metals

Rose Gold
An alloy of yellow gold and copper, rose gold complements almost any coloured stone and skin tone. It also matches readily with either white or yellow gold, and is often used as an accent colour in a halo, or band or prongs.
