Metal Guide
All metals used in the production of Affinity Diamonds jewellery pieces are sourced from suppliers that are members of the Responsible Jewellery Council. The Council ensures metals are sourced through channels that observe human rights, labour rights and working conditions. The health, and safety of workers, and the environmental considerations are factored into the Council's assessment of the supply chain.
At Affinity Diamonds we offer the choice between Platinum and Gold for our custom pieces to meet your needs. To make an informed decision it is important to understand the differences between the two metals.
What is the difference between Platinum and Gold?
Gold is a precious metal that is available in Yellow, White and Rose Gold.
Platinum is an exclusive and valuable metal that comes in a white silver tone.
- Comfort: Platinum is known to be hypoallergenic and therefore more suitable for someone with sensitive skin.
- Durability: White gold is stronger than Platinum, however in terms of scratching, platinum is less scratch resistant than Gold.
- Cost: Precious metals fluctuate in price, at the moment white gold and platinum are very similar in price.
What is the difference between 9k and 18k Gold?
Affinity Diamonds offers 18K Gold, and for some select pieces of jewellery we offer 9K Gold.
- As Gold is a soft metal it needs to be mixed with alloys to handcraft jewellery. 9K Gold has 37% of pure Gold and 18K has 75% pure Gold.
- 18K Gold is more resistant to scratches and more suitable for everyday wear.
- 18K Gold jewellery will have a 750 stamp to reflect that it is 75% pure Gold, whereas 9K Gold will have a 370 stamp to reflect its composition of 37% pure Gold.
Gold Colour Options
White Gold
White Gold is rhodium plated to give a white finish which is similar to platinum whereas platinum naturally has a silvery finish. White Gold will require a yearly rhodium plating, which is complimentary for all Affinity Diamonds pieces.
Yellow Gold
Yellow Gold is an extraordinary and rare precious metal, with an unmatched combination of chemical and physical properties. It is the only yellow metal and the most non-reactive of all metals
Rose Gold
An alloy of yellow gold and copper, one of the advantages of rose gold is that it complements almost any coloured stone and skin tone. It also matches readily with either white or yellow gold, and is often used as an accent colour in a halo, or band or prongs.
