Have you met the perfect person? And now you need the perfect ring?
These are 3 Rules to live by when buying a diamond.
Ensure your ring is GIA Certified
What is GIA?
GIA is an independent, non-profit organization that conducts gem research, educates gem professionals and sets the standards for determining diamond quality.
GIA does not mine diamonds, nor does it buy, sell or trade them commercially. It doesn’t appraise diamonds and is not otherwise involved in diamond pricing or valuation. GIA operates independently of these commercial interests, ensuring that its diamond quality assessments are completely objective and unbiased.
What does the certificate tell you?
A GIA report contains a full scientific and unbiased assessment of your diamond’s 4Cs. GIA tests every diamond submitted to establish its authenticity as a diamond and whether it’s been subjected to treatments. GIA reports provide a full description of the diamond, including colour, weight, measurements, and cutting style, and will disclose any known treatments.
1. Report Number, Cutting Style and Measurements
In this area, you can find some information about the diamond’s characteristics, the date the diamond was graded, shape and cutting style and measurements.
2. The Four Cs – Classification and Attributes
Each of these Cs are important factors for consideration when you are buying a diamond. You can choose your centre of gravity based on your budget.
3. Additional Grading Information
The polish and symmetry will affect the shape appeal and overall cut grading as they directly impact the diamond’s appearance. As for fluorescence, this will make your diamond appear dull and cloudy. Affinity Diamonds strongly recommend you buy a diamond with none or faint fluorescence.
Affinity Diamonds recommends a GIA certified diamond. Ensure any diamond you purchase has a reputable GIA certificate, as the certificate is your guarantee and official paperwork.
We highly encourage all customers to locate the GIA number before purchase. Use a 3Dx magnification eyeglass to locate the GIA number on the girdle of the diamond. This will confirm the diamond you are the certificate presented.
Don’t compromise on the diamond’s cut grade of EXCELLENT
The cut of a diamond is related to its proportion. Many cutters choose to sacrifice some of the diamond’s beauty to produce a stone that is a larger carat weight. Cut, more than any other diamond characteristics is what gives the diamond its sparkle.
A diamond gets its brilliance and scintillation by the cut and polish of its facets, which allows the maximum amount of light to enter and reflect through the diamond, giving it life. Affinity Diamonds recommends a cut grade no less than excellent cut, to optimise the ultimate life in your diamond.
What is an independent valuation?
Affinity Diamonds engages an independent third-party valuer, following the completion of the ring. A jewellery appraisal, also known as a jewellery valuation, is a document received from a jewellery appraiser that describes the item of jewellery being valued and a retail value price of the item.
Affinity Diamonds chooses to engage a number of the National Council of Jewellery Valuers (NCJV) to independently value each individual client ring.
Who is NCJV are?
The National Council of Jewellery Valuers (NCJV) was established in 1984 to promote and maintain the highest professional standards for jewellery and fine arts valuation in Australia.
Having the ring independently valued before providing payment is extremely important as it ensures you receive high quality workmanship on the ring and the diamond specifications are true to the accompanying GIA certificate. This official report supplied by the NCJV ensures three important elements, these being that you receive high quality workmanship on the ring, the right diamond and can be used for insurance purposes.
